Annette takes Emilie’s place at finishing school to study magic and get an education, and Emilie attends university to become a physician’s hack and prove her worth.
They work as assistants to the rich so that they are worn down by the powerful magic they use in place of their employers. Hacks are people able to use magic but not wealthy or noble enough to pursue higher education. Noble girls are not allowed to study the magic required to by physicians because of the damaging effects it has on the boy, and Annette cannot afford to attend university to pursue the only magical career path available to her: life as a hack. Because of the strict social hierarchies, neither of them is able to achieve their dreams. Linsey: Sure!
